Europe was a continent that occupied the westernmost part of Eurasia. The continent was surrounded by bodies of water on three sides. The Arctic Ocean to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the west, and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. Europe was connected to Asia by the narrow Strait of Gibraltar. Europe is the second-largest continent in terms of area and population, after Asia. In general, most people consider Europe to be one of the world’s three “great continents” along with Africa and North America. Europe is also known for its cultural and geographic diversity. Europeans have established and developed many open-minded social values like freedom of religion, democracy, human rights, and individualism. The world’s major languages are spoken in Europe: English, German, Russian and French.
